Student Selected for National Swimming Championships
Third year students Leo Johnson has qualified for the 100m Freestyle at the National Open Short Course Disability Swimming Championships 2013 to be held at the Ponds Forge International Swimming Pool in Sheffield on 23-24 November 2013. This event will feature the best para- swimmers from across Great Britain.
Having only recently decided to see if he could qualify to compete, the 20 year old from Putney, south west London, would encourage any other students with a disability to consider taking part in para sports.
Leo explains:
鈥淚 first started thinking about taking part in para sports quite soon after coming to University. A few friends had mentioned it to me before but I had never really taken much interest, I was quite content playing rugby union and cricket for my school and London Welsh RFC. However, I sustained a knee injury through overuse partly due to my disability.
鈥淚 then, in consultation with the array of medical professionals you see on a regular basis as a disabled person, decided that swimming and rowing were going to be most beneficial to me in the long term. Then for the first time, 鈥業 thought wait a minute if I can compete pretty well with able bodied people, what would I be able to do on a level playing field?鈥�
鈥淚 am a very competitive person and I find doing competitive sports helps to give me a release. I actually have found that I do better academically when I am taking part in competitive sport. Then my mind was set I was going to chase up getting classified in both sports. This is a lot easier said than done. I put myself on the swimming classification waiting list in February and I only got classified on the 5th October! Rowing was slightly more straightforward it only took 6 months!
鈥淪o, on the 5th October I took part in my first ever Regional championship as part of the 鈥渙bservation in competition鈥� part of my classification. I had been provisionally placed in the S9 category: disability swimming is ranked from S1-S10 for physical impairments, 1 being the most affected and 10 being the least. Certain events had Short Course National qualifying times, depending on your classification category and I found out that I had qualified for the 100m Freestyle. Simply put, I was over the moon.鈥�
鈥淢y long term goals are to see what level I can compete at in the future. My immediate goal at the moment is to put in a good time at the Short Course Nationals. Then it will be the BUCS Short Course Championships. After that, the big goal is the British International meet at Tollcross Sports Centre in April. From there I don鈥檛 have a clue. I am trying to take it one step at a time.鈥�

"The best thing about my course is the variety of different topics we encounter during the course, while the best thing about the School is the atmosphere. There is a very friendly buzz around the School of Ocean Sciences. The highlight so far has been the Virginia Institute of Marine Science field trip I took part in this summer. Simply put it was a fantastic experience. Other than sports, I have been involved with the Endeavour Society and I am also currently the University鈥檚 Disabled Students Senator. Socially I enjoy the occasional night out. But mostly I just enjoy spending time with my good friends, wherever that maybe or whatever we may be doing.
Leo is a former student of both Bethany School and St James Independent School for Senior Boys and reckons the best thing about living in 天天吃瓜is the proximity to the brilliant natural areas that surround the city.
