Dr Ewa Krzyszczyk

Lecturer in Zoology

Dr Ewa Krzyszczyk

Overview

I graduated with a BSc in Zoology with Marine Zoology from ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï in 2003, and finished my MSc in Marine Mammal Science from ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï in 2005. I carried out my PhD in behavioural ecology at The Shark Bay Dolphin Project (Georgetown University) between 2008-2013. the project focused on demography, development, and behaviour of bottlenose dolphins. Following my PhD, I worked as a postdoc at Georgetown University. I initiated projects to further explore the demography of the entire dolphin population; social networks, disease, and pathogen transmission; development of behaviour and social networks in juvenile dolphins; and novel pattern-based identification methods. In 2019, I moved to the Turks and Caicos Islands, and worked as a Resident Lecturer at the Center for Marine Resource Studies for the The School for Field Studies, the United States' largest environmental study abroad program provider for undergraduate students. I taught Marine Resource Management, Directed Research, Tropical Marine Ecosystems: Monitoring and Management, and Marine Megafauna Ecology and Conservation. Here, my research focused on reef health in several different ways: 1) Using fishermen catch, underwater visual surveys, and Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) to determine fishing pressure; 2) Using focal follows on reef fish to determine the effect of a parasite that causes Black Spot Syndrome (BSS) has on activity budgets and foraging activity on reef systems; 3) Using length, diet, and behaviour to assess the managment of lionfish culling.

My research interests are centered within the field of behavioural ecology and predominantly focus on understanding how behaviour changes with environment, age, disease, and anthropogenic effects. I am particularly interested in applying novel approaches to quantify the interaction of these and the potential consequences within an and between ecosystems.
